Most lessons end with packing up. The teaching is done, the bell is coming, and the last few minutes go to housekeeping.
Those minutes are worth more than that. They are when learning is most likely to stick, and they are your best chance to find out whether it did. Here is how to use them.
The short version of why
We remember the beginning and the end of a lesson better than the middle (Murdock, 1962). Sousa (2022) calls those two peaks prime-time and the stretch between them down-time, and argues that closure belongs in the second peak, where students have the best chance of making sense of what they just learned.
So the close of a lesson is prime time, not leftover time. It is also the only moment when you can find out what students actually understood while there is still time to do something about it. One activity, two jobs.
Step 1: Write the question before you teach
Before the lesson, write the one question a student could answer only if they got today’s point.
This takes two minutes and it sharpens the whole lesson. If you cannot write a question about your objective, the objective is too vague to teach. That question is your closure activity.
Step 2: Protect the last five minutes
Put it on the plan. Set a timer if you need to. If you run short on time, cut from the middle of the lesson rather than the end, because the middle is the weakest part for memory anyway.
Students answer from memory, no notes, on paper or a sticky note. Two to three minutes is enough.
Step 3: Sort into three piles
As you collect them, drop each response into one of three piles: got it, nearly, and not yet.
That is the whole analysis. It takes about four minutes for a class of thirty. Do not grade them, do not write comments, just sort. Sorting is what turns a stack of paper into information you can act on.
Step 4: Let the piles decide tomorrow
- Most in got it, a few not yet. Move on. Pull the small group for five minutes while everyone else starts independent work.
- A big nearly pile. Do not reteach the whole thing, because they have most of it. Open with one practice problem targeting the exact sticking point.
- Half or more in not yet. The lesson was the problem, not the students. Reteach it differently. Not louder, not slower, differently.
- Piles split by task type rather than by student. Your question may have tested reading or wording rather than the concept. Rewrite the question before you rewrite the lesson.
That last one matters. Sometimes the data is telling you about your assessment rather than your teaching.
Four closure questions that actually give you something
“Any questions?” gives you silence. Thumbs up measures confidence, not understanding. These work better:
- One problem, no notes. The single question that best represents today’s target.
- The muddiest point. “What is still unclear?” This surfaces misconceptions you would never have predicted.
- Explain it to someone who was absent. Two or three sentences. Gaps in the explanation are gaps in the understanding.
- Predict tomorrow. “Given today, what do you think comes next?” This tells you whether they saw the point or just did the tasks.
Why this works beyond your classroom
What you are running is a cycle that improvement researchers call plan, do, study, act: try something small, gather evidence, adjust, repeat (Bryk et al., 2015). Teachers already plan, do, and act. The step usually missing is study, because studying needs evidence.
Five minutes of closure gives you that evidence, and it costs nothing you were not already spending.
If your grade-level team runs the same closure question for a week and brings their three piles to a meeting, you have the beginnings of something powerful. People change their practice when they look at real evidence together, not when they are told to.
